Fridge Not Cooling? 7 Common Refrigerator Problems

Fridge Not Cooling? 7 Common Refrigerator Problems

Most refrigerator problems give you a warning first

Your refrigerator runs 24 hours a day, so you notice fast when something goes wrong. Warm milk, a puddle on the floor or a fridge that won’t stop humming are all signs it needs attention. Catch the problem early and you can often save the food inside and avoid a costly replacement.

Below are the seven refrigerator problems the Shark Appliance Repair team fixes most often. Some you can check yourself in a few minutes. Others need a trained technician, and that’s where we come in.

7 common refrigerator problems and what causes them

Unplug the refrigerator or switch off its breaker before you inspect anything behind or under it.

1. Refrigerator not cooling

This is the call we get most. If the freezer is cold but the fridge is warm, or both are warm, airflow or a cooling part has failed.

  • Check that the thermostat is set to 37°F (3°C) for the fridge and 0°F (-18°C) for the freezer.
  • Make sure food isn’t blocking the vents between the freezer and fridge sections.
  • Common causes a technician checks: dirty condenser coils, a failed evaporator fan, a bad start relay or a failing compressor.

2. Water leaking on the floor

A puddle under or in front of the fridge usually points to a drainage or water-line problem.

  • A clogged defrost drain sends melted frost onto the floor or into the crisper drawers.
  • A cracked or loose water supply line to the ice maker or dispenser can leak slowly for weeks.
  • A cracked drain pan under the unit can overflow.

3. Freezer frosting over

Heavy frost on the back wall of the freezer often means the automatic defrost system has stopped working. A failed defrost heater, thermostat or timer is the usual culprit. A torn door gasket that lets warm, humid air in can cause frost too.

4. Ice maker not working

  • Confirm the ice maker’s arm or switch is in the on position.
  • Check that the water supply valve behind the fridge is fully open.
  • Replace the water filter if it’s more than 6 months old. A clogged filter slows water flow.
  • A frozen fill tube or a failed water inlet valve needs a repair visit.

5. Loud or unusual noises

Some humming and clicking is normal. Grinding, buzzing or loud rattling is not. Worn evaporator or condenser fan motors are the most common cause. A struggling compressor can also get louder before it fails.

6. Running constantly

A fridge that never cycles off is working too hard to stay cold.

  • Vacuum the condenser coils, found behind the kick plate or on the back of the unit.
  • Test the door seals: close a dollar bill in the door. If it slides out easily, the gasket may need replacing.
  • Keep the fridge away from ovens, dishwashers and direct sunlight.

7. Fridge too cold or freezing food

Frozen lettuce and icy milk usually mean the thermostat is set too low or has failed. A damper control stuck open can also let too much freezer air into the fridge section.

When to call a professional

Some refrigerator repairs involve sealed refrigerant systems, electrical controls and specialized tools. Call a technician if you notice any of these:

  • The fridge is warm and you can’t hear the compressor running
  • A burning smell, sparking or tripped breakers
  • Oily residue near the coils, which can signal a refrigerant leak
  • Food spoiling within a day or two despite the right thermostat settings
  • A leak you can’t trace to the drain pan, defrost drain or water line

If your refrigerator is still under manufacturer warranty, check your warranty terms before booking a repair.

Keep your refrigerator running longer

A little routine care prevents most of the problems above.

  • Vacuum the condenser coils every 6 to 12 months, more often with pets.
  • Wipe door gaskets with warm soapy water and check them for cracks.
  • Replace the water filter every 6 months.
  • Leave a few inches of space behind the fridge for airflow.
  • Don’t overpack shelves or block the air vents.
